The ReGen Maiorca is an eco-tourism project that aims to transform a 17.8-hectare inactive quarry in Figueira da Foz, near the rice paddies of the River Mondego, into a regenerative and recreational landscape. The project recognizes the local significance of the site, particularly its striking blue waters, and seeks to balance ecological regeneration with public engagement and environmentally conscious tourism practices.
Currently, the quarry features arid terrain with minimal vegetation and consists of two main areas: a deep, water-filled quarry with mineral-rich waters and a shallower sand extraction pit. Despite being a private and enclosed space and its rough state, the old quarry, known as Maiorca Lagoon, has become a local attraction due to its visual appeal, frequently visited and shared on social media.
From degenerative to regenerative landscapes, the projects' overall purpose is to be "planet positive". This means that ReGen Maiorca would implement regenerative measures, give more area to natural ecosystems, improve biodiversity, and restore biogeophysical systems such as freshwater and nutrient cycles.
The project's vision is to create a landscape that enhances biodiversity, engages the local community, and augments the site's recreational potential. The focus is on ecological restoration, community involvement, and promoting eco-tourism rather than aesthetic improvements.
Regenerative strategies include expanding the water retention basin to increase humidity and support plant growth, introducing native plant species to rehabilitate soil and establish a resilient ecosystem, using plants to remove excess minerals and contaminants to improve water quality, and designing various habitats such as aquatic, woodland, and meadow environments to support diverse species.
Recreational and eco-tourism enhancements involve creating designated zones for safe, eco-friendly water activities, while the wood cabins along the hills allow an immersive nature experience. With an established network of trails and viewpoints for visitors to explore the landscape, and by involving local stakeholders in planning and managing activities, the project ensures alignment with local interests and cultural values.
Respecting the site's legacy and the client's aspirations, ReGen Maiorca seeks to regenerate the old quarry into a site beneficial for nature, visitors, and the community, by employing strategies to repurpose the industrial site, enhance biodiversity, support the local community, and contributing to regional identity, while promoting eco-tourism to attract visitors who value nature.
