Martim Moniz Plaza

Focusing on the creation of a multicultural urban design solution for the iconic area of Martim Moniz Plaza able to address the community's expressed needs, our proposal is an all-year-round usable public space based on a Garden of the World concept. Our vision aligns with the desire for a cohesive and inclusive hub. Martim Moniz's civic importance as a venue for historical events is integral to our approach, emphasizing an integrated intervention across the entire area.

The project for the revitalization of this important public space fosters unity inside green systems. The transformative nature of our design ensures a holistic approach, responding to the environmental, social, and economic aspects of the community. We aim to unify the public space with the historic city zone, linking the Martim Moniz garden to the broader green structure of the city.

In our contemporary response to revitalizing central Lisbon for the new Martim Moniz plaza, we based ourselves on the program premises of the competition and were guided by ecological principles. Our project aims to create an inclusive, diverse, and regenerative public space, as a celebration of nature and the multiple cultures that enrich the city.

Inspired by the concept of "ecotone" - a transitional zone between two biomes - our design envisions Martim Moniz as a vibrant space where different communities converge, fostering diversity and interpersonal connections. Transforming a conventional square dominated by pavement into an ecotone-inspired garden is both exciting and challenging.

Gardens, as expressions of the human-nature relationship, take on diverse forms and meanings across cultures. Our proposal is the culmination of a thoughtful exploration of history, design, and elements that characterize gardens from various cultural perspectives.

In the field of urban transformation, our project incorporates a strategy for future mobility, green infrastructure, and sustainable stormwater management, all rooted in nature-based solutions.

Martim Moniz, through our urban, environmental, and social lens, is envisioned as a vibrant, living fabric in the city. The green transformation is not a manifesto, it's a necessary change for a hopeful future.
