Tucked away in Porto's bustling streets, Bairro Maria Vitorina is part of the city's rich history and traditional way of life. Historically home to the city's working class, these clusters of modest homes were built during Porto’s industrial boom. They have since become a unique part of the city’s architectural and social fabric, defined by their narrow streets, shared courtyards, and strong sense of community.
Now, through a forward-thinking project by MASSLAB, Bairro Maria Vitorina is set to undergo an exciting transformation. MASSLAB’s vision seeks to convert the former ilha into a modern housing complex that embraces contemporary living while preserving the community spirit that defines the area. This project rethinks traditional ways of living by introducing new communal spaces designed to foster connection among residents, ensuring that the essence of the ilha—its sense of belonging and shared experiences—is not lost.
The redevelopment will introduce inviting areas where neighbors can meet, socialize, and reconnect, ensuring that the communal heart of Bairro Maria Vitorina beats just as strongly as ever, now adapted to the needs of a modern, urban lifestyle.
