The former electric train building of the Pasila machine shop area in Helsinki will be transformed into a 45.000 sqm office, retail, and hotel mixed-use development and reimagined as a part of the social, commercial, and cultural hub in historical heritage.
Much more than a new urban landmark in the Pasila machine shop area of Helsinki, the new Train Factory area should be a place for everyone - a mixed-use neighborhood that accommodates a system of paths, parks, plazas, and open spaces that encourage people to spend more time outdoors, together. The project was carefully thought out regarding the public realm, where all public spaces were designed before any private ones, emphasizing the importance of people, the engagement between people and building all year round, and how it can still be a place for everyone - a mixed-use neighborhood that accommodates a system of streets, parks, plazas, and open spaces that encourages people to spend more time outdoors, together, at the same time that boosts the dynamic of the area.
The project aimed to renew the area through a comprehensive urban redesign that would integrate the 1970s workshop building into the everyday life of the local community. The team's approach centered on creating a building that responded to the needs of the population, rather than imposing a standard structure. The street level was designed around an organic vaulted ceiling, providing an inviting entrance, while a green platform offered panoramic views of the city.
Throughout the development process, the team placed a strong emphasis on collaboration and engaging with the local community, involving the developer, public authorities, and area residents to achieve a cohesive proposal. The partnership between MASSLAB and AFRY Ark Studio provided a multidisciplinary approach to the project, resulting in a wide-ranging solution that went beyond the initial brief.
The form of the building was designed to create a cost-efficient and adaptable building suited to changing needs over time. To materialize the proposal, the materials were chosen by their context, such as wood, glass, and brick. The wood at ground level, part of the Finnish ethos, invites us to move and participate in urban life. The brick is a continuous dialogue with the surroundings. As for the glass top, it dissolves the building into the skyline of Helsinki
The vision for the Train Factory will enhance and build upon the rich cultural heritage of the area, which hosts relevant historical buildings and large public spaces. A strategy based on a unique blend of special cultural heritage and forward-thinking solutions, the project's ambition is to set an example that contributes to the long-lasting aspirations of the municipality and benefits everyone in the city by generating a variety of public spaces that can be used all year around.
The competition, hosted by the Train Factory Group and Helsinki Municipality, featured five international entries and was conducted in two selection phases. The winning proposal was the result of successful partnerships between MASSLAB and Afry offices, drawing on their local insights and technical expertise.
